If you have just moved into a new build and you have a wide expanse of ground behind the house, this is the ideal set-up for a giant terrace. By this, we are talking about 100 sq m and above, which really allows you to build something special.
The first thing to do is draw a large diagram, a to-scale plan of the terrace. Of course, you need a base and at this stage, choose a timber frame and tongue & groove decking or natural stone with a concrete base, the choice is yours. Cost out the project and source the materials online.
Building the base
Hire a small excavator and dig out soil to allow for a run-off away from the house, aiming to keep level with the aluminium stacker doors that span the width of the wall. Shore off the area with timber and drive corner posts in. Then a layer of hardcore, small rebar and you are ready for the concrete pour; you can either lay natural stone, pavers or go for a timber deck. A weekend should see the job done; don’t forget to pipe in water and electricity under the concrete.
If your DIY skills are not up to this level, call in a local landscape gardener and he will turn your concept into reality. He can work to your budget, crazy paving saves money as you can buy broken pavers at a reduced price.
Drainage
You need to consider drainage; if it is a wet area of the garden, dig out a trench and fill it with shingle/aggregate. You can use the soil to create levels, so no need to have it taken away. Shading
If you have the budget for a solid roof, so much the better; you could use large umbrellas but that will only cover a portion of the terrace. A permanent steel roof would be ideal; the harsh Aussie sun is brutal around Xmas time and with a permanent roof, your furniture won’t suffer.
Outdoor furniture
Rattan suites are superb and they come in a range of styles, a large coffee table is the central point and the next project could be building a bar in one corner. Take a drive to your local garden centre and check out their products in an outdoor setting. Barstools, hanging chairs and hammocks are all on the menu.
Natural greenery
A few large pots with exotic plants make for a stunning arrangement; this can be done on a gradual basis, look for a plant for a specific spot and when you find it, move on to the next. Hanging baskets along the outer line of the terrace add colour, with hanging vines a good choice.
